Sleep is an essential part of one’s overall health. It helps with the body’s homeostasis and cellular repair as well as energy restoration. Grander et al. (2016) reported on the correlation between individuals sleep habits and cardiovascular health. “Insufficient sleep duration,” he stated, “Is prevalent in the population and is associated with weight gain and obesity, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mortality.” Lack of sleep includes conditions, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, among others. Hoevenaar-Blom et. al (2013)
conducted a twelve-year study of over 20,000 healthy men and women in the Netherlands and found that individuals who slept less than six hours a day had a 15% higher risk of cardiovascular disease incidence and a 23% increased risk of coronary heart disease compared to
those who slept seven to eight hours. Heart conditions that can arise in individuals who sleep less include hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and history of heart attack as well as stroke (Attman et. al., 2012).

Older adults are at increased risk for having falls with decreased sleep duration (Stone et. al., 2014). Sleep impacts gross motor skills as well as performance of activities of daily living and occupational tasks. Therefore, a good night’s rest should not be overlooked in considering a person’s health and its impact on quality of life.
